These courses, held in collaboration with the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM), provide an overview of current experience of HIV in Australia and the region.

Included is an introduction to the basic science associated with HIV including, transmission and viral reproduction, intracellular activity and implications for untreated and treated disease. Issues covered include the importance of antiretroviralA medication or other substance which is active against retroviruses such as HIV. therapy, and the latest strategies affecting when to start, change and stop treatment as well as concepts of Post Exposure Prophylaxis and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.

Panel presentations and group work with case studies provides insight in to clinicalPertaining to or founded on observation and treatment of participants, as distinguished from theoretical or basic science. research, trials and ethics(In clinical trials) The process of determining that a proposed clinical trial conforms to a wide range of moral, scientific and ethical standards, to ensure that participants in the trial are not abused, mistreated or unfairly taken advantage of. Before a clinical trial can go ahead, it must be given approval via an independent ethics process. in HIV, as well as highlighting issues facing diverse communities. Basic and Update Courses for HIV Community Workers and Volunteers are held annually.
