Release of bold new HIV Strategy for NSW applauded

The National Association of People With HIV Australia (NAPWHA) welcomes the release of a new UN report showing that acceleration in the global response is producing positive results. This comes as countries approach the 1000 day deadline to achieve global HIV prevention and treatment targets set last year under the 2011 UN Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS—a declaration that Australia helped champion.

The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations has welcomed the appointment of a new Australian ambassador for HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.

The Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, has announced that James Gilling will succeed Murray Proctor in the role.

Mr Gilling is currently First Assistant Director General, Policy and Sector Division, AusAIDAustralian Agency for International Development. Australian Government agency responsible for managing the Australian Government's official overseas aid program. .

Many people with HIV are likely to be unaware of these advances.

New HIV treatment guidelines: a major step in revolutionising HIV treatment and prevention in Australia

NAPWA has welcomed the release of updated guidelines for treating HIV issued yesterday by the US Department of Health and Human Services. In a major shift, the new guidelines recommend that all people with HIV consider going on HIV treatment, whether recently infected or with more advanced HIV disease.

The new guidelines also note recent evidence about the additional benefit of taking HIV treatment in reducing HIV transmission and recommend that HIV treatment be offered to HIV positive people who are at risk of transmitting HIV to sexual partners.
