Reporting HIV in Australia

NAPWA welcomes the publication of Reporting HIV in Australia: Information for Journalists, which was launched in Canberra by Senator Louise Pratt on 18 June.

Published by AFAOAustralian Federation of AIDS Organisations. AFAO is the peak non-government organisation representing Australia's community-based response to HIV/AIDS. AFAO's work includes education, policy, advocacy and international projects. , Reporting HIV is a resource for the media which provides advice and practical suggestions for effective and principled reporting of HIV. It includes a language guide, facts about HIV and AIDS, backgrounders to the epidemic in Australia and globally, and information about transmission, testing, treatment, prevention and legal regulation.

NAPWA President Robert Mitchell, who spoke at the launch about the importance of appropriate HIV reporting, welcomed the publication of this resource. "This is a valuable resource for the media", he said. "It also provides an informative background guide for the correct use of language in general policy development for HIV in Australia.
